moment in time

“Leave me be, take your hands away.
Let me breathe,
and let me breathe on my own.”

I sit in a stall, watching the minutes tick away as time comes to an end. An old man I can’t see, sings to a tune unheard of. The waves of his voice soar high and low, his voice ancient yet soulful. I hear another one of the elders let out a wail and I feel my own heart cry out aside his. The singer’s words are muffled; they’re unclear but incredibly clear.
His song of loss and pain goes on and on. Are they words of love? What do I hear when there’s nothing to see? I hear sobbing become louder than the old man’s song, but as the two sounds come together, they form a beautiful melody that feels just right. Perhaps that’s what life is. The meaninglessness of a tune existing in plain sight without any use at all, yet these are the moments you remember the most. The moments you’ll never forget and hold onto for the rest of your days.

A moment is all it takes. A moment from a melody of darkness and depression, that haunts from a beginning to an end. A mere moment in their lives.
An eternity for me.
