God caught me by the lake;
together we looked at my reflection in the glistening pool.
He asked me what had happened to the spark in my eyes.
I told him I’d grown up; died in the past, lived in the future, and tolerated the moment.
He said He thought I’d be happy,
that I had everything I’d ever wanted.
I had nothing left to say.
I thought I had everything I wanted as well,
but somehow it was not enough.
Never enough.
Me or what I wanted?
Never enough.
Because I never asked anything of you, and you never offered.
Never enough.
Because the moments with you were all I needed.
Never enough.
Because I’ve always deserved so much more.
He didn’t look up from the lake as he spoke,
“That used to be you.”
But that was how the waves of water worked;
they washed away who you were,
leaving nothing but a hollow reflection behind.
